Leave the walls of Rome and see the first examples of Christian Art, exploring the ancient tunnels of the Catacombs and walking along the  Appian Way, one of the major roads in ancient Rome which linked Rome to Brindisi, the most important commercial port of the time.

Why book tour

The tour lasts 3 hours and is done by bus and on foot. Once you are collected at the starting point, you will be taken to the Catacombs. Built almost 2,000 years ago as funerary chambers for the first Christians (they had to look for an open space to bury them as there was none within the walls of the city), the catacombs contain funerary niches, mosaics and sarcophagi, as well as antique religious paintings.

You will walk through the Catacombs of St Sebastian and St Callixtus where the Papal Crypt and some of the oldest Christian works are found. You will also see the outside of the Tomb of Caecilia Metella.

Then you will walk along the Appian Way and past the old aqueducts which provided water to Rome.
