Tips for visiting the Vatican Museums

Is an Audience the same as a Papal Mass?  

No. Papal Masses are liturgical celebrations in the form of a mass. The best known are the ones at Easter and Christmas. They may also be held for solemn occasions such as the canonisation of a saint. They are usually held in St. Peter’s Basilica although they can also be held in other Roman basilicas.

The Pope doesn’t usually give Sunday masses in the Vatican in person. On Sundays he addresses worshipers at 12 o’clock for the Angelus. The many masses that are held on Sundays are given by Vatican priests.

How can you take part in a Papal Mass?

Tickets are needed to attend one of these masses. They’re free but hard to get hold of, especially for significant dates of the year such as Easter or Midnight Mass. The process is to visit the Prefecture of the Papal Household’s website and download the form, which must be filled in and sent by fax.

They can also be requested from the Swiss Guard at the Bronze doors to the right of St. Peter’s Basilica, but they only have tickets for masses on subsequent days and it’s almost impossible to get them for the most significant dates.

Tips for the Wednesday Papal Audiences

From experience, the queues start to form as of around 6am. The doors open at about 7.45am, so what time should we get there? We recommend arriving before 7am to be able to choose a good front row spot. Before entering the Audience precinct there’s a security check similar to those at airports.

The precinct is organised with barriers, with open spaces between them, which are usually in the most demand. We recommend you find a seat opposite one of the gaps in the barriers. The spot doesn’t really matter as the Pope does almost the entire round.

The Pope arrives at about 9.30am and begins the round of greeting and blessing of worshipers. This tour takes His Holiness close to the worshipers and allows them to photograph him or even interact with him if they’re lucky. They are moments of madness, many people even stand on their chairs to get a better view of the Pope.

The Mass begins at about 10.30am and lasts a little over an hour. During the mass, calm returns and everybody sits down.

If you can’t get there early, we recommend arriving at least for 9.30am to see the Pope arrive. There will always be empty seats, just not in the best places. If you arrive at 10.30am you’ll be able to join the mass but will not see the joyful arrival of the Pope.

The visit is exclusively for you and the people in your group, and can adapt to your tastes and interests. It begins before the general public are allowed in so you will enjoy a private experience.
