Parking restrictions in the centre of Rome

Parking in the centre of Rome is reserved for accredited residents only and even they have quite a lot of trouble finding empty spaces. The tourist or occasional visitor, therefore, can forget about trying to park their car in the central and touristy areas of the city.

If you do park in the centre, you risk having the police tow your car away and having to enter into a complicated labyrinth of paperwork and fines to get it back. Break-ins are another possible problem.

In many areas unauthorised vehicles are not even allow to enter, let along park. The ZTL zones are under video surveillance and their use is limited to residents or visitors who are driving to a hotel with its own carpark. The hotel has to authorise this access in advance and provide you with a provisional licence number.

Parking at hotels or monuments

Very few important monuments have parking for visitors and if they do, the prices are prohibitive. If you’re going to stay at a central hotel they tend not to have carparks, so if this is a vital amenity you will be better off seeking accommodation in the outlying areas.

Public carparks

There is a limited number of public carparks in central Rome. You can view the options available where online booking is possible on this link. To name a few of the most popular, we have the one at Termini station or that at the Villa Borghese Gardens, both of which are quite expensive.

There are various carparks near Fiumicino Airport, with prices starting at 18 euros per day, but they generally provide a very basic service with problems such as a lack of surveillance, lack of covered parking spaces, difficult access, etc.

The price to park in a public carpark in Rome ranges from 1 to 5 euros per hour and from 12 to 40 euros per day.

More parkings in Rome

Getting to the Vatican is very easy from every point in town. The main means of transport have many stops within the Vatican area.

1. BUS

bus 64

It’s one of the most used lines because it connects Termini station with the Vatican City, stopping at key sites such as Piazza Venezia or Largo Argentina.
You must be careful here since it is usual for pickpockets to frequent this place.
Once you arrive to the Vatican area, the best stops are Ospedale Generale Ssanto Spirito or the next one.

bus 62

This is another very practical line because it connects key places in town. In particular, it connects Repubblica, Piazza Spagna, Piazza Venezia and Argentina. This bus has stops very close to the Vatican, next to Via della Conciliazione.

bus 40

An express bus which makes a few stops and is a fast alternative to line 64. The route it covers is Termini – Piazza Venezia – Argentina – Piazza Pia (next to the Vatican).

bus 81

An extensive line that crosses the heart of the city and connects the Vatican with dozens of points of interest such as the Colosseum, Circo Massimo, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Colonna,… finishing in Piazza Risorgimento, next to the Vatican Museum entrance.

2. ON FOOT

If you are physically fit, this is a very good option.
We recommend this specific route that it will not take you more than half an hour: Setting off from Piazza Venezia we continue through Via del Plebiscito, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and then the amazing Via de la Concilliazione, ending in  St Peter’s Square.

3. TAXI

Getting a taxi to reach the Vatican from Termini will cost approximately between 15 to 20 euros depending on the day, the time and the amount of luggage.
If you arrive from the airport, it may be more cost-effective to hire private transport. A taxi can cost between 40 to 60 euros.

The main taxi stops of the area are in Piazza Cavour and Piazza del Risorgimento, although it will not be difficult to find taxies if you are on foot at St Peter’s Aquare, in Via de la Conciliazione.

4. METRO

The Vatican is two stops away from Line A’s metro: Cipro and Ottaviano. The first one is closer to the Museums and the second one to St Peter’s Square.
The stops are 10 minutes away from each other.
